How to determine the correct Skateboard Deck for you
Choosing Skateboard Decks depends on your size, style of skating and personal choice. All Skateboard Decks have differences of width and length. To ensure you are receiving the proper deck that fits your need. Below are some basic guidelines to consider when shopping for decks.
Micro
For riders 5 years old or younger, height under 3’4” and has a shoe size 3 or smaller.
Deck width: 6.5" to 6.75”
Deck length: 27.2” to 27.6”
Mini
For riders 6 to 8 years old, height between 3’5” and 4’4” and has a shoe size 4-6.
Deck width: 7.0"
Deck length: 28”
Mid-size
For skaters 9 to 12 years old between 4’5” and 5’2” tall who wear size 7-8 shoes.
Deck width: 7.3”
Deck length: 29”
Full-size
For riders over 13 years old, height higher than 5’3” and has a shoe size of 9 and up.
Decks 7.5” or higher
Riding Styles
Individual’s rider’s style of skating will also have to be considered when choosing a deck. Below are the basic guidelines for the size and style of skating.
7.5" to 8" - Standard board for adult riders doing more technical tricks and street skating
8.0" to 8.25" – Adult riders skating on ramps, pools and parks
8.25" and larger – Adult riders skating on pools, long cruising, vert and going old school
How to determine the correct Trucks for your skateboard.
Choosing Skateboard Trucks depends on the width of your deck. The Truck axle should match closely with the width of the deck. Truck size can be measured by the width of axle and the width of the hanger. Below are the basic guidelines to consider when shopping for Trucks.
3.0", 3.5", 4.0", 4.5" - 6.5" to 7.0" deck width
7.75" Axle / 5.0" Hanger (129mm) - 7.25” to 8" deck width
8.0" Axle / 5.25" Hanger (139mm) - 8” to 8.5" deck width
8.5" Axle / 5.75" Hanger (149mm) - 8.5” to 9" deck width
9.0" Axle / 6.5" Hanger (169mm) - 9” to 10” deck width
10.0" Axle / 8.5" Hanger (215mm) - 10” and above deck width
Trucks height is the distance between the bottom of the skate deck and the hanger. Standard mid-sized trucks works best for most riders. Other riders prefer low or high trucks. Below are some pointers to consider about the height of the trucks.
Low: Awesome for extra stability for flip tricks recommended for smaller wheels around (50-55mm).
High: Great for cruising and carving suggested for large wheels (56mm and higher).
How to determine the correct Wheels for your skateboard.
Skateboard wheels vary in size, color and durability. The diameter and duro of the wheel affects on the way you ride your skateboard. The diameter and duro depends on you style of skating and personal choice. Below are basic guidelines to consider when shopping for wheels.
Diameter
Bigger wheels are faster and smaller wheels are slower to ride.
52-55mm – Slower and stable best for smaller riders and trick riding
56-60mm – Great for beginners and for street, ramps and parks
60mm+ – Long Boards, Old school type, great for rougher surfaces
Duro
The Duro measures the wheel’s hardness. Harder wheels are faster; softer wheels are slower but have better grip.
99A- Standard wheel duro
87a – soft wheel, great for rough surface, long boards and street boards that require more grip.
95a – a bit harder and faster with a less grip but still great
99a – Great speed and grip for beginners, street, ramp and park.
100a+ – Hardest and fastest wheel with the least grip.
How to determine the correct size of bearings for your wheels.
Bearings have different qualities and may not vary in size. The best bearings to shop for are the ones with a lot more sealing, has the inner ball-bearings with higher quality metals. Even though they can be costly, you are paying for the quality that’s worth the price.
All skateboard bearings are the same size and will fit to any type of wheels.
How to determine if you need riser pads for your skateboard.
Riser Pads are not needed for decks that use wheels that are smaller than 55mm.
Wheels that are larger, has a more chance of the wheel to make contact with the underside of the skateboard deck more likely to cause a fall. For safety, the longer your skateboard the larger your wheel, the more height is needed for the riser pad.
1/8” Riser pads can help keep the hardware from vibrating loose.
How to determine the correct size of hardware you need to assemble a skateboard.
Hardware is need when you get riser pads. For safety, it is suggested to get longer bolts. If you decide to go with shorter ones even if you end up choosing longer ones, it is easy to trim it down with a hacksaw. Below are basic guidelines for measurements of bolts.
7/8" to 1" - No Riser
1" to 1 1/8" - 1/8" Riser
1 1/4" - 1/4" Riser
1 1/2" - 1/2" Riser
How to determine what type of grip tape to apply to your skateboard.
Grip tape is always needed for your skateboard. The material is sandpaper like that goes on top of your deck to help your shoes grip the board. The grip tape mostly comes in one large sheet and cut based on the size and shape of your board. You can customize the look of the deck with different colors and patterns.
